Eco-Evolutionary Dynamics: Community Consequences of (Mal)Adaptation
نویسنده
چکیده
Contemporary evolution can shape ecological dynamics at population, community and ecosystem levels. Innovative new experiments with walking sticks confirm this expectation by showing that adaptation to predatory birds has large effects on walking stick population sizes, arthropod communities and herbivory.

Evolution of Camouflage Drives Rapid Ecological Change in an Insect Community
BACKGROUND Evolutionary change in individual species has been hypothesized to have far-reaching consequences for entire ecological communities, and such coupling of ecological and evolutionary dynamics ("eco-evolutionary dynamics") has been demonstrated for a variety systems. However, the general importance of evolutionary dynamics for ecological dynamics remains unclear. Here, we investigate h...
متن کاملEco-evolutionary spatial dynamics in the Glanville fritillary butterfly.
Demographic population dynamics, gene flow, and local adaptation may influence each other and lead to coupling of ecological and evolutionary dynamics, especially in species inhabiting fragmented heterogeneous environments. Here, I review long-term research on eco-evolutionary spatial dynamics in the Glanville fritillary butterfly inhabiting a large network of approximately 4,000 meadows in Fin...
متن کاملGeometrical envelopes: Extending graphical contemporary niche theory to communities and eco-evolutionary dynamics.
Contemporary niche theory is a powerful structuring framework in theoretical ecology. First developed in the context of resource competition, it has been extended to encompass other types of regulating factors such as shared predators, parasites or inhibitors. A central component of contemporary niche theory is a graphical approach popularized by Tilman that illustrates the different outcomes o...
متن کاملInvasion triple trouble: Environmental fluctuations, fluctuation-adapted invaders and fluctuation-mal-adapted communities all govern invasion success
24 25 It has been suggested that climate change will lead to increased environmental 26 fluctuations, which will undoubtedly have evolutionary consequences for all biota. For 27 instance, fluctuations can directly increase the risk of invasions of alien species into 28 new areas, as these species have repeatedly been proposed to benefit from disturbances. 29 At the same time increased environme...
متن کاملTowards a general, population-level understanding of eco-evolutionary change.
Most population-level studies of eco-evolutionary dynamics assume that evolutionary change occurs in response to ecological change and vice versa. However, a growing number of papers report simultaneous ecological and evolutionary change, suggesting that the eco-evolutionary consequences of environmental change for populations can only be fully understood through the simultaneous analysis of st...
